Description
We invite applications for a System Engineer for the Long Wavelength
Array (LWA) at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, to begin
as soon as June of 2007. The System Engineer has the lead
responsibility for the overall design and development of the LWA
instrument. The System Engineer will chair the Technical Working
Group, and be the person responsible for system-level issues such as
interfaces between subsystems, overall design issues (array and
station configuration, overall station design philosophy, etc.), RFI
issues, and risk assessment and mitigation. The System Engineer will
develop requirements for implementing, testing and verification of the
array. The System Engineer will work together with the Scientific
Director, Executive Project Director, Project Scientist, and System
Scientist to ensure that the LWA achieves its design goals. The
System Engineer will coordinate technical efforts at UNM and other
contributing universities and national laboratories. The System
Engineer will report to the Exectutive Project Director. The range of
seniority is open, and the primary place of work could be either at
the Project Office in Albuquerque or in Socorro.
The successful candidate must have at least a Master's Degree in
engineering or a related field.
Preferred qualifications include experience with coordinating large
scale engineering efforts, a strong background in RF engineering and
digital signal processing, and familiarity with software engineering
processes. Knowledge of radio astronomy is also desirable, but not
required. The successful candidate should have a demonstrated ability
to work effectively with diverse groups of scientists and engineers.
The Long Wavelength Array will use novel technologies to explore the
universe at low frequencies. It will be designed, constructed and
operated by the Southwest Consortium, a group of universities and
government laboratories consisting of the University of New Mexico,
the Naval Research Laboratory, the University of Texas at Austin, and
the Los Alamos National Laboratory. Further information about the

Remuneration: The System Engineer will be hired as an employee of
